The Evidence

Consequently, Agentic Experience Design is defined by a new set of core concerns that have no direct equivalent in traditional UX. The discipline focuses on delegation design, which provides a formal grammar for how humans grant, scope, and revoke an agent's authority. It is concerned with trust calibration, the dynamic negotiation between human confidence and system reliability. It also elevates the importance of interrupt design - designing the critical, high-stakes moments when an agent must escalate a decision back to a human. An poorly timed interruption can either train users into dismissal or allow catastrophic errors to compound. These new design primitives are essential for creating value in what the essay calls the Invisible Layer, where agents work on our behalf without any visible interface.
The Implication
If this thesis is correct, the design and product industries must fundamentally re-evaluate where they create value. This means moving beyond hiring UX designers to apply a familiar process to AI products. It requires cultivating a discipline that is fluent in systems thinking, ethics, and the specific mechanics of delegation design and trust architecture. For individual designers, the challenge is to transition from being shapers of interfaces to being architects of relationships. This involves a deliberate focus on defining outcome specifications, designing robust interrupt patterns, and mastering the art of calibrating human trust in machine actors. The window to establish these patterns is closing, and failing to act means ceding the future of human-AI relationships to purely technical concerns, creating a world of powerful but brittle and untrustworthy systems.
